MEET YOUR CAMPIMATION COUNSELOR

Hello! I’m William Waller, and I’ve been a commercial animator for almost 20 years. After graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design where I studied Computer Art and animation with a specialization in Character Animation, I spent several years designing interactive courseware for a government contractor before venturing out and starting a small Motion Design and Animation boutique called Dripsblack. During that time I was able to take on teaching several classes in design and animation at the Art Institute of Jacksonville. When Dripsblack sadly came to an end during Covid I moved on to work for a slightly larger studio based in Boston, where I was fortunate enough to get to create work for large brands such as Hasbro, Paypal, Wayfair and more. Currently I’m operating as a freelance motion designer and animator under the Circle Circle Dot Dot moniker. As a father myself, I’m always looking for ways to keep my son’s creativity intact and thriving. Camps like this one have always been an important part of keeping his brain busy and his screen time to a minimum during long Summer days. When he mentioned that he would be interested in attending an animation camp, we figured the best course of action would be to start one our selves!

I’m so excited to see what your kids create once we peel away the mystery of the process and show them how many awesome ways we can make things move.

WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT FROM THE CAMP

Kids coming into Campimation should expect to a collection of creative projects over the course of 4 afternoons. We’ll begin with very basic projects that introduce animation at the most fundamental level that explain how and why humans are even able to perceive animation in the first place. This day will include creating thaumatropes, zoetropes, or things of that nature. Day 2 is all about flipbooks. Kids will be provided everything they need to begin creating flipbooks that can be as simple or as complex as they wish and will be encouraged to explore abstract ideas that don’t require exceptional drawing skills and draftsmanship. Days 3 and 4 we will dive into stop motion animation and claymation; again with all tools, materials, and equipment provided. During this time, your kids will be interacting with iPhones provided by the camp that are stripped down to only have the apps necessary to capture animation.

WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT EXPECT FROM THE CAMP

This camp is not meant to teach your kids to draw. While I am fully aware that draftsmanship is a key part of developing animation as a career, I believe focusing on it at this point of a child’s life can lead them to shy away from experiencing animation because they feel they aren’t good enough. I firmly believe that animation is an accessible art form and kids should be able to experience it without draftsmanship and access to technology acting as gate keepers. Speaking of tech, because of time limits and my desire to have as level of a playing field as possible, I’ve removed as much tech from the camp as possible. So sadly I won’t be able to teach your kid’s any kind of advanced animation software.

WHAT TO BRING

I’ll be providing just about everything your kids will need to create all of the projects that we will be creating throughout the week. However, any favorite sketchbooks, pencils, pens, markers or other (non digital) tools they are familiar with are welcome! Make sure your kid is wearing comfy clothes and any snacks and water they may need for 4 hours each day.

THE STUDIO

We’ve partnered with the incredibly talented Jenna Alexander and she has graciously agreed to welcome your kiddos to her studio space for camp. The studio is just north of Downtown St. Augustine, on San Marco Ave, behind the restaurant Sunday.
